Stroll through the old heart of Castricum


What did Castricum look like before the village became what it is today? At the Ommetje Oosterbuurt on Sunday, October 12, 2025, you'll discover the agricultural past, medieval structure, and archaeological richness of this historic hamlet.

In about 90 minutes, a guide from the Oer-IJ Foundation will lead you past striking places and stories about the origins of Castricum, which once consisted of just a few hamlets built on sandbanks in the former inner delta of the Oer-IJ.


What do you encounter?

  • The hidden church. A silent witness to religious oppression, where Catholics practiced their faith in secret.

  • Location of Hilde The grave of “Hilde”, the namesake of the Archaeological Museum in Castricum, was found here.

  • Castles 't Blockhuijs and Cronenburg You will learn where these castles stood, who lived there and what remains of them.

  • Tympanum A work of art that refers to archaeological excavations in the district in the 1990s.


The walk also shows how the landscape between horticultural areas and meadows has been shaped over centuries by the influence of water and sand and how the Ciebeek once demarcated the Oosterbuurt.
