I would like to give you an insight into one of those places that is so Dutch that it seems almost unreal: Giethoorn.
This charming waterfront village with its thatched houses and wooden bridges is also known as the “Venice of the North” and is a wonderful destination for a day trip.
You can take a whisper boat or canoe there, take a boat tour, or simply stroll along the canals and enjoy the view of the flowers, the small gardens, and the peaceful atmosphere. It's a paradise for families: children love steering a small boat or feeding the ducks from the jetty.
There are cozy terraces and ice cream parlors along the waterfront, and in summer it's bustling with activity. Outside of peak season, it's a quiet, idyllic village where time seems to stand still. Dogs are allowed on many boats (it's always worth checking with the boat rental company), so your four-legged friend can also accompany you on your adventure.
A visit to Giethoorn can be easily combined with a weekend or weekend stay at Boutique Stay Uitgeest. From there, it's just over an hour's drive—a beautiful route through the green heart of the Netherlands.
