Why Akersloot aan Zee?
That's often the first reaction. After all, Akersloot isn't actually by the sea. At least not at the moment. And that's precisely what makes this bike tour so appealing.
On Saturday, April 25th and September 26th, 2026, the Oer-IJ Foundation is organizing a bike tour to Akersloot aan Zee. Accompanied by local Oer-IJ guides, you will explore the history of Akersloot and its surroundings.
A village with a maritime past
On this excursion, you'll discover why the coastline once surrounded Akersloot. Long before the landscape looked as we know it today, this area was shaped by the tides and the water. The guides will lead you to places where this past is still visible – you just have to know where to look.
The bike tour offers a surprisingly different perspective on the village, not only through the stories, but also through the landscape you cycle through.

Five facts about Akersloot
"Akersloot aan Zee" is less unusual than it sounds. A thousand years ago, this area was shaped by the sea and the tides. The water literally flooded inland here via the Oer-IJ. No beach club, just seawater.
The landscape around Akersloot was not shaped by chance, but by water. Ditches, changes in elevation, and straight lines appear logical, but are the result of centuries of water management and adaptation to a wet landscape.
Akersloot lies between two old beach ridges. This means that natural sand dunes once stood here, offering protection from the water. You will cycle past them unnoticed during your excursion.
The pumping station, built in 1879, tells the story of life with water. The starting point of the tour is no coincidence. Without pumping stations like this one, Akersloot would look very different – or might not even exist.
The past becomes clearer when you know it. After this bike tour, you'll perceive the landscape differently. What once seemed like "just pastureland" suddenly reveals itself as rich in traces of water and history.
