A Ukrainian, an Italian, and two Spaniards enter a theater...
No, this is not a joke.
This is the beginning of the Horizon Quartet story.
The four young clarinetists met at the Amsterdam Conservatory. They came from different countries and didn't all speak the same native language, but they soon discovered that music is the most beautiful common language there is.
And quite honestly? I think this could be even more beautiful than all the concerts they've given so far.
On Sunday, November 1st, they will be performing at the coffee concert at De Zwaan Cultureel in Uitgeest. And I have a feeling that this will be one of those performances where afterwards you think: "That hour went by so quickly."
A trip without suitcases
The beauty of the Horizon Quartet is that you never quite know where the next musical note will take you.
One moment classical music is playing, the next Spanish influences emerge, followed by jazz, folk, or Latin American sounds. It's like traveling to several countries during a single concert, without even packing a suitcase.
That might sound ambitious.
But precisely because the four musicians all have different backgrounds, this musical journey feels very natural.
No rigid intentions
When I think of a coffee concert, I honestly don't imagine it as a stuffy affair.
I imagine a relaxing Sunday morning. A cup of coffee, a comfortable armchair, and an hour in which you don't have to be anywhere else but where you are.
No phone.
No shopping list.
Just listen.
And perhaps nowadays that's even more luxurious than a weekend trip.
First music, then lunch at the harbor
Would you like to turn this Sunday morning into a real outing? Then De Zwaan Cultureel has prepared something great for you.
You can purchase a ticket including lunch at the Breeze restaurant in Uitgeest harbor. After the concert, you can enjoy a leisurely lunch there.
Personally, I think that's a wonderful combination. First an hour of beautiful music, then a relaxed lunch overlooking the water. That's my idea of a perfect Sunday.

5 reasons why this interests me
I simply want to know what four clarinets sound like together. After all, you don't hear that every day.
When four musicians from three different countries make music together, you can be almost certain that there will be surprises.
I wonder how many people come to a coffee concert and end up leaving as clarinet fans.
First an hour of music, then lunch at Breeze by the harbor... I don't think you could plan a Sunday any worse.
And let's be honest... after the first sentence of this blog post, you secretly want to know how the story with the Ukrainian, the Italian, and the two Spaniards ends. 😉
