Some invitations don't require much thought – you just feel them. Like this one: the pop-up lunch in the vegetable garden at Marquette Estate in Heemskerk. Just the words "vegetable garden" and "pop-up" make your mouth water before you even arrive.
On Saturday, November 22nd, the historic vegetable garden of the Marquette Estate will be transformed into a charming setting for lunch. Together with the local vegetable society (Het Groente Genootschap), guests are invited to an afternoon filled with autumnal flavors, stories from the gardeners, and dishes made directly from the garden.
The afternoon begins with a guided tour of the vegetable garden, where you will learn all about the seasonal harvest. Afterwards, you will enjoy a three-course lunch at the castle, prepared with fresh ingredients from the garden.
The menu sounds like an ode to autumn:
Amuse-bouche: Parsnip waffle with Parma ham and fig compote
Starter: Celery carpaccio with sweet and sour mushrooms
Main course: Duck breast with roasted carrot cream and gingerbread jus
Dessert: Pumpkin bread with vanilla ice cream and warm caramel
Cost: €39.50 per person, including guided tour and lunch. Tours start between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm, so you can choose when you want to participate.
We also love eating from our vegetable garden. We don't have one behind the house, but someone has planted theirs in our garden. It's a shared luxury: they do the hard work, we enjoy the view – and every now and then a basket of fresh vegetables. That's always a treat.
Perhaps that's what makes this pop-up lunch so entertaining: the feeling of being able to enjoy someone else's love for the garden for a while without having to weed or toil yourself.
Simply sit down, taste and enjoy what the earth has to offer.
