Some plans you look forward to weeks in advance. Like this one.
On the first evening of SAIL, we're invited to a friend's house in Amsterdam – with a breathtaking view of the IJ River. From their balcony, we can watch the impressive arrival of the tall ships. And as if that weren't enough, friends from Barcelona are coming to visit later in the week. We've already arranged to go into the city together and experience everything. This year's SAIL will be truly special.
From Wednesday, August 20, to Sunday, August 24, 2025, Amsterdam will be transformed into a world of impressive sailing ships and quays filled with music, food, culture, and summer vibes. The energy on the waterfront is palpable—even just by looking.
What awaits you:
Wednesday, August 20
The event begins with a spectacular SAIL-In parade: a procession of large ships sailing from IJmuiden to Amsterdam. A skyline of sails, masts, and flags fills the IJ River—an impressive sight no matter where you are.
Thursday and Friday
Time to admire the ships up close, stroll along the quays, board the boat, and enjoy music, theater, and tastings. In the evening, the atmosphere is even more atmospheric with light shows, live music, and fireworks.
Saturday and Sunday
There's plenty of culture, maritime demonstrations, and a lively atmosphere. On Sunday, the SAIL-Out Parade takes place, where the ships bid farewell to the city one by one. A wonderful end to the week.
Why this is no ordinary event
Because it's magnificent and yet feels personal. Because you don't have to plan anything to be moved—it just happens. In the sound of the harbor, in the lapping of the waves, when you watch people seeing such a ship up close for the first time.

Tip from me
Let yourself drift. Hike, look, taste, listen. Wear comfortable shoes, bring something warm for the evening, and find a place where you can simply absorb the impressions. It's impressive, but above all, simply beautiful.
