This is the kind of trip you wouldn't easily think of yourself, but which makes you happy afterwards.

We stumbled upon this short walk via Oer-IJ and, to be honest, it's exactly one of those afternoons where you think "we're just going for a walk"... and then end up staying a little longer.

You cross the old village of Bakkum, the forest on the inner edge of the dunes, and pass the bird lake. But it's not about the path – it's about what you hear along the way and what you suddenly begin to see.

Because that's exactly the exciting part: things that you would normally just walk past suddenly get a story.

5 things you might not know

  • You walk past an old tank wall from the Second World War without noticing it – until someone points it out to you.

  • The sea of birds is simply there, but with an explanation, you suddenly see it in a completely different light.

  • This is one of those walks where you find yourself stopping more often than walking.

  • You might think beforehand: "3 km, that'll be done in no time", but thanks to the stories it doesn't feel rushed at all.

  • There's a good chance that afterwards you'll think: I've walked past here many times... but I've never really been there.
