How often do you walk past a place without realizing how old it actually is?
And apparently, this happens quite frequently in Uitgeest.
On this excursion organized by the Oer-IJ Foundation, you will hike through Uitgeest while the guides tell you about ancient beach ridges, vanished landscapes, and the people who lived here thousands of years ago.
And quite honestly? It's precisely these enthusiastic stories that make the whole thing so surprisingly interesting.
Before you know it, you find yourself looking at places you would normally just drive past without a second thought, with completely different eyes.

What is the Silent Landscape?
Uitgeest is therefore much older and more interesting than many people think.
During the walk, you'll hear stories about the landscape thousands of years ago and discover how people once lived here among beach ridges, water, and polders. And these aren't just dry facts.
These are the kind of tour guides who speak with such enthusiasm that you inevitably become captivated. Before you know it, you're listening intently to an explanation of ancient waterways, even though you only thought: "We're just going for a walk."
5 things you might not know
People already lived in this area around 450 BC.
There is a good chance that during this walk you will look at places differently that you would normally pass by without a second thought.
Some volunteers at the Oer-IJ Foundation can speak with such enthusiasm that one spontaneously develops an interest in old dikes and waterways.
Uitgeest lies precisely in a transitional area between beach ridges and polders, and this still shapes the appearance of the landscape today.
This is typically the kind of activity that you think will be "just a short walk", but you end up talking about for much longer than expected.
