How well do you actually know the village you are currently walking through?

Uitgeest may seem manageable, but beneath its streets, squares and meadows lies a landscape with a surprisingly long history.

Every fourth Sunday afternoon of the month, the Oer-IJ Foundation organizes the Ommetje Uitgeest: a walk that deals with the origins and history of Uitgeest.

A walk through a landscape full of stories

This walk will take you past places that tell us about the origins of the village and how water, soil, and people have influenced each other here over the centuries. At various points, we will highlight the distinctive landscape, allowing you to see Uitgeest in a new light.

In even-numbered months, the excursion takes place along the west side of the village, in odd-numbered months along the east side.

Practical information

• When: Every fourth Sunday of the month (April to September 2026)

• Start: 1:00 PM

• Duration: approx. 1.5 hours

• Starting point: the old town hall, Kerkbuurt 3, Uitgeest

• Cost: €5.00 per person

• The excursion will take place with a minimum of 5 participants.

• Maximum 15 participants

• Less suitable for toddlers

• The route along the west side is less suitable for wheelchairs.

Five interesting facts about the Ommetje Uitgeest

1. For centuries, the old town hall was the administrative heart of Uitgeest.

   From legal matters to decisions about water and land – the development of the village was determined here. Intimate atmosphere and beautiful interior design.

2. Something very special for us: Bo and I got married here.

   The old town hall is not only historically significant, but also personally important. A place of memories. Who else from Uitgeest got married here?

3. The small square around the town hall invites you to linger.

   This is one of those places where you naturally pause for a moment. The vastness, the buildings, and the tranquility make it clear that this has been a central meeting place for the village for generations.

4. Uitgeest is created by water, even where it is not immediately visible.

   Traces of the old IJ landscape lie beneath roads and meadows. Streams, dams, and waterways determined where people could live.

5. West and East show two faces of the same village.

   By exploring a different side of Uitgeest each month, you will discover how different the landscape can be within a single village – yet it remains a whole.
